From 6 to 10 June, the Teatro Real will host Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s Medea, the second version of this opera this season after the theatre hosted Cherubini’s opening performance. Medea is one of the most attractive French Baroque operas and a testimony to the composer’s mastery of the genre.
This new version by the French stars, Veronique Gens and Laurent Naouri presents the main characters along with their intense emotions and powerful vocal writing.
This opera was a critical and commercial hit that lasted only a few months, after which it was almost 300 years before it was performed again on stage. A common characteristic to all the opera Medeas is that the main character must have enormous vocal and theatre calibre. Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s Medea is no exception and the climax comes halfway through the opera when, emulating its predecessor, Armide, summons the wrath of the underworld to assist her in her terrible revenge.
Charpentier’s only opera premièred without much success at the Académie Royale de Musique in 1693. Its revival in modern times, which was accelerated after the pioneering photographic register directed by Nadia Boulanger in 1952, has turned it into one of the most appreciated artistic pieces of French opera from the Sun King era.
