As part of the Madrid en Danza Festival 2024, The Spanish National Ballet will première a flamenco show based on the photographic vision of this art by Ruvén Afanador from Colombia on 23 and 24 May at the Teatros del Canal (Sala Roja).
With music by Cristóbal Saavedra, Marcos Morau, who was trained between Barcelona and New York, director of the La Veronal dance ensemble and winner of the 2013 National Dance Prize, has designed a production that fuses Afanador's perspectives with the aim of constructing a new artistic universe. Morau seeks to transfigure one legacy into another and generate a common place where the voices of different art forms can collaborate and inspire others.
The work pivots around photographic series such as Mil Besos (2009) and Ángel Gitano (2014), in which Afanador incorporated the image of flamenco into contemporary visual language in a very personal way. These shots were taken in high-contrast black and white under the Andalusian sun to create striking plays on light and shadow.
